Medical Colleges in Pakistan

Medical profession is as old as a human being. .No body can deny the importance of medical profession in human community. This profession is a respectable job and helping one for the needy people. In Pakistan also the doctors domination remarkable admiration for their service to the people. Moreover students who can productively complete their medical education from a recognized medical college in Pakistan can be sure of having a secured job throughout their life. As the number of students aspiring for an MBBS or BDS degree is very high, getting a seat in a medical college in Pakistan is not always easy. While the MBBS course in Pakistan is of five years period, the BDS course is of four years period. Moreover one can also follow master’s degree and research in different medical colleges of Pakistan.

To cater to the increasing demand of medical professionals, the government has set up medical colleges in various parts of Pakistan. From 1970s it has also started encouraging the formation of private medical colleges in Pakistan. There are at present 32 medical colleges in the public sector and 36 medical colleges in private sector leading the total number of recognized medical colleges in Pakistan to 68. The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) is the constitutional independent organization that is responsible for marinating standard of medical education in Pakistan. The PMDC also lays down the minimum qualification for the appointment of teachers in various medical colleges of Pakistan. For admission to a medical college of the public sector, the provincial government conducts an entry test. The performance of the candidates in the entry test would carry 50% weight age, the performance at the Intermediate level would carry 40% weight age and performance at the Metric level would carry 10% weight age. However, private sector medical colleges in Pakistan may conduct their own entry test.
